The Japan Patent Office has rejected the opposition filed by Fiat Chrysler, the automotive group that owns the "JEEP" trademarks, against the application for the trademark "JEEPER" in class 8 (hand tools). The Japan Office finds that despite JEEP has a certain level of reputation in Japan, the scope of protection of the trademark cannot extend beyond any goods and services. According to the Japan Office, the new mark has been applied for dissimilar goods, the signs are conceptually dissimilar and not similar enough from the visual and phonetic perspective. Therefore, the Office rejects any likelihood of confusion between the earlier reputed trademark for 4x4 vehicles and the new mark for hand tools.
