The Parliament has passed the Artificial Intelligence Act on Wednesday, with 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions. It guarantees security and the enforcement of fundamental rights while boosting innovation, establishing Europe as a leader in this field. The Act is a breakthrough, introducing rules prohibiting certain AI applications that threaten citizens' rights, including biometric profiling (RBI) systems based on sensitive characteristics, clear obligations for other high-risk AI systems such as critical infrastructure, transparency requirements, among others. This Act responds directly to the proposals of citizens at the Conference on the Future of Europe (COFE).
