Pedro Merino Baylos

PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

Pedro Merino has been a partner at BAYLOS since 1996. With over 25 years of experience advising national and international clients in all Industrial Property, Intellectual Property and Unfair Competition matters. He specialises in litigation in these fields, specifically in patent matters, trademarks, designs and geographical indications, as well as copyrights and unfair competition.

Over the last few years, he has participated in important patent litigations in the pharmaceutical, telecommunications and wind turbine sectors, as well as sectors relating to different industrial machinery and one of the most famous television programme formats in Spain.

His professional activity also includes advising on contractual and pre-litigation matters, as well as participation in cross-border litigation.

Pedro is usually a lecturer in seminars and conferences. He has written dozens of articles in the IP world and is co-author of the book commenting the current Spanish Patents Act.  

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law at the University C.E.U. (1995).

  • Practising lawyer since 1996.

RECOGNITIONS:

  • Recognized among the top patent litigation attorneys by the prestigious Chambers Europe, Who’s Who Legal, Leaders League, IAM, WTR 1000, IP Stars and Best Lawyers.

  • Between February 2017 and January 2021, he was President of the Spanish Group of the AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property).

  • Between 2011 and 2016 he was Of Counsel of the UK based law firm OLSWANG in Spain.

ASSOCIATIONS:

  • Honorary Member of the Spanish Group of the AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property).

  • Member of the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM).

PUBLICATIONS:

  • Author of numerous articles. His publications include his participation as co-author in the book "La nueva Ley de patentes. Ley 24/2015, de 24 de julio" published in 2015 by ARANZADI publishing house; or the article in which he co-authored "Doctrina jurisprudencial sobre indemnización por daños y perjuicios en Propiedad Industrial e Intelectual" published by the Spanish Group of the AIPPI in 2005 in the Libro Homenaje a Alberto Bercovitz.

TEACHING:

  • Guest Professor in the patent module at the University of Alicante for the Magister Lvcentinvs (since 2016).

  • Regular speaker at courses and conferences both nationally and internationally. He has participated as speaker in the UK (University College London) and Germany (in the frame of Grur).
